What Is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a recognised primary healthcare profession that focuses on how your whole body works together — not just on isolated symptoms. Osteopaths are trained to look at the body as one connected system and to find and treat the root cause of your problem, rather than simply managing the pain it creates.
Some of the key principles behind osteopathy are:
-
The body has the ability to heal itself
-
Structure and function are closely connected
-
Good fluid movement is essential for good health
Osteopathic treatment is gentle, hands-on, and suitable for everyone — from babies and children to adults and seniors.
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
Your first visit will include a detailed discussion about your medical history and current symptoms, followed by a physical examination. This may involve assessing your posture, how you move, and any areas of pain or restriction. You may be asked to perform simple movements so your osteopath can observe how your body functions as a whole.
Once the examination is complete, your osteopath will explain their findings and discuss a treatment plan tailored to you. Treatment may begin at your first appointment if appropriate. This may include hands-on techniques such as soft tissue work, gentle joint manipulation and articulation, and fascial release techniques. These techniques will be explained to you in detail, allowing you to give your full verbal consent before treatment begins.
You will also have time to ask any questions you have throughout the consultation, and at the end we will aim to give you advice on possible exercises, hot and cold treatment to decrease any post-treatment soreness, along with a clear plan and the aims of your treatment outcomes.
